Protection

Volleyball is hard on knees and ankles. Protect them with kneepads for digs and dives, ankle braces for landings and blocks, and sleeves for compression and warmth.

New players usually start with a good pair of kneepads - it's the first piece of protection most coaches recommend.

They should feel snug and stay centered over the kneecap without sliding, pinching, or leaving deep pressure marks - measure a couple of inches above the kneecap and match it to the brand's size chart, since sizing varies between Mizuno, Nike and Asics.

Size down for a secure, stay-in-place fit, or size up if you prefer less compression or tend to swell during long tournaments - when in doubt, go with the tighter option since loose pads sag and slip during dives.

Replace them once the sleeve stretches out, the padding feels compressed, they start slipping during play, or the fabric begins to irritate the skin - don't wait until a tournament to find out they've worn down.

They protect the arms and elbows from floor burns, abrasions and impact during dives and passes, while also offering light compression that supports blood flow and helps reduce muscle fatigue during long matches.

It depends on your position - liberos and defensive players who dive frequently benefit from padded sleeves for elbow and forearm protection, while hitters and setters often prefer lighter compression sleeves for muscle support without the bulk.
