A good tournament checklist: volleyball shoes, kneepads, an extra pair of socks, your uniform plus a warm-up layer, a full water bottle, snacks, headbands or hair ties, athletic tape and a pair of slides for between matches. A volleyball backpack with a shoe compartment keeps it all organized.

Most coaches carry a whistle, a dry-erase coaching board, a ball pump with a pressure gauge, a mesh ball bag and a first aid kit. They're not required, but most beach players wear them. Sunglasses cut glare so you can track high serves and sets against the sun, and they protect your eyes from UV rays and blowing sand. Choose a secure, wraparound fit that stays on when you dive, from brands like Oakley and Pit Viper. Shop all sunglasses.

Take kneepads, shoes and clothes out of your bag right after practice and let them air-dry instead of leaving them zipped up.
